What causes email to be received with an X instead of the inserted picture that was included when sent?

This email was composed with a photo image "inserted" and sent to a group of friends. All recipients received the email with the image missing. Note:This was an "inserted", not an "attached" image.
What causes email to be received with an X instead of the inserted picture that was included when sent?
Photos are now the method of choice for the transmission of viruses. As a safety precaution, many email services are excluding photos from their attachments in order to try to control the spread of viruses.
